Volleyball Falls To Navy, 3-1, In Season-Finale

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior co-captain Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.), sophomore setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Libby Malloy (Stratford, Conn.) each recorded double-doubles, while senior co-captain libero Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) had 24 digs, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Navy, 3-1, in Patriot League action on Saturday evening in the season-finale for both teams by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-21 and 27-25. With the loss, the Crusaders conclude the year with a 1-25 overall record (0-14 Patriot League), while the Midshipmen conclude the year with a 17-13 overall record (5-9 Patriot League).
Malloy had a career night as she recorded her first collegiate double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs. Surface earned her fourth double-double of the season and the sixth of her career with 11 kills and 10 digs, while O'Donnell recorded her eighth double-double of the year and the 11th of her career with 42 assists and 11 digs. Junior Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) led the team with 14 kills and a career-best four service aces. Anderson's 24 digs was a season-best, while freshman Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) added seven kills.
Navy was led by Marissa Watson who had a double-double of 29 assists and 11 digs, while Jenny Rudewicz also recorded a double-double with 13 assists and 12 digs. Alexa Gibbs led the Midshipmen with 14 kills.
Before tonight's match, Anderson was honored for her hard work and dedication to the volleyball program on Senior Day. A native of Weston, Connecticut, Anderson has been outstanding on the court and in the class room over the last four years. She played in all 105 matches that the Crusaders played in during her career. Anderson is one of the greatest defensive players in the history of Holy Cross volleyball as she is one of only four players to record 1,000 career digs. Her 1,092 career digs are the fourth most ever in the program's history. As a junior in 2007, Anderson's 3.72 digs per game rank third all-time in a single-season at Holy Cross, while her 350 total digs are fourth. As a sophomore she had a huge match defensively against Bucknell (Oct. 21, 2006) with a career-best 33 digs. She is also one of the best servers in the history of the program as her 106 career service aces are the fourth most at the school. Anderson has been strong in the class room as she is a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. She has also shown the ability to lead as she is a two-time team co-captain.
