Holy Cross loses tough battle

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Holy Cross was defeated by Marist 2-3 in its final match of the Red Fox Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Two Crusaders posted double-doubles, senior Caitlin Agotinacchio (Bellmore, N.Y.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, tallied a game-high 24 kills and team-high 23 digs, while sophomore Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) totaled 12 kills and 21 digs.

Holy Cross, who won the first match (30-28) and lost games two and three (26-30, 26-30), rallied in the fourth (30-27) to tie the match at 2-all. In game five, Marist beat the Crusaders to 15 points (15-12), ending the match in favor of the Red Foxes, 3-2.

Senior setter Michele Leahy (Andover, Mass.) accumulated a season-high 48 assists and added 14 digs and three aces for the game.

Holy Cross was also led by junior Caitlin O'Callaghan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who registered 12 kills and sophomore Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) who recorded 10 digs.

Three Red Foxes had double-doubles, including Jaime Kenworthy with 23 kills and 25 digs, Kim McEathron with 17 kills and 11 digs and Amy Gillespie with 12 kills and 24 digs.

Holy Cross falls to 1-10 overall with the loss, while Marist improves to 6-4 overall.

The Crusaders next match is on Wednesday, Sept. 22 against Central Connecticut State at 7 p.m., at the Hart Center.
