Crusaders post first league victory over Lehigh

Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross volleyball team recorded its first Patriot League victory over Lehigh in five matches (30-25, 30-17, 26-30, 23-30, 15-10), Friday night at the Hart Recreation Center.
The Crusaders were led by senior Caitlin Agostinacchio (Bellmore, N.Y.), who registered a season-high and game-high of 26 kills and added six digs.
Holy Cross jumped off to a strong start in the first game. Agostinacchio posted five kills on her first five attempts, helping the Crusaders reach match-point (29-20) before the Mountain Hawks staged a five-point run bringing the score within four. The game ended on a kill by Agosinacchio.
The Crusaders went on win the second game, 30-17, but was upended by the Lehigh in the third. The game was tied at 25-all before Lehigh pulled away on a three-point run. Holy Cross squeezed in a point, bringing to score to 26-28 before the Mountain Hawks closed it out, 30-26. Holy Cross went on to lose the fourth game (23-30), putting the match-score tied at 2-all.
A duo of freshman ended game five classically with a kill by Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.), who tapped the ball just over the net onto Lehigh's side, it was set by Meagan Merinder (Andover, Mass.).
Sophomore Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) recorded a game-high of 17 digs, while Strawson added 19 kills. Senior setter Michelle Leahy (Andover, Mass.) recorded five aces and a season-high of 56 assists.
The Mountain Hawks were led by Michelle Schwendenmann (Cincinnati, Ohio), who tallied a team-high 20 kills, setter Kathleen Lafferty (Collegeville, Pa.), who posted 55 assists and Nikky Barnes (El Paso, Texas), who recorded 14 digs.
Holy Cross improves its record to 2-14 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh falls to 1-12 and 1-3 in the Patriot League.
The Crusaders return back to the Hart Recreation Center, Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. to take on conference rival Lafayette.
