Women's Lacrosse Wins Key Patriot League Contest Versus Lehigh, 10-7

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Taylor Zebrowski (Verona, N.J.) posted three goals and one assist for four points, while sophomore goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) tallied 10 saves as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Lehigh, 10-7, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the win, the Crusaders have won six of their last nine games including two straight league contests and improve to 7-7 overall (3-2 PL), while the Mountain Hawks fall to 7-8 overall (2-3 PL). The Crusaders' seven overall wins are their most in a season since going 13-6 in 2007.

With the victory, the Crusaders have qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. The tournament will be held at top-seeded Navy (5-0 PL) on April 27 and April 29. Colgate (3-2) is also in the tournament. American (3-3) and Lafayette (2-3) are still in contention. On Saturday, April 21, the Crusaders will play Lafayette at Holy Cross Field at 7:00 p.m., while Colgate will play at Bucknell (0-5 PL) and Navy will play at Lehigh (2-3).

Sophomore Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) was also strong as she netted three goals, while freshman Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) posted two goals. Senior Caitie Shea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) tallied one goal and one assist for two points. Junior Sara Cox (Chatham, N.J.) led the team with three caused turnovers, while she tied Ryan for the team-lead in ground balls with three. Ryan led the Crusaders with three draw controls giving her a team-best 54 for the season which are second all-time in a single-season at the school.

The Mountain Hawks were led by Carli Sukonik and Julie McBrien who each scored two goals. Megan Kelly led the team with five ground balls.

After, Kelsey Yenco gave Lehigh an early 1-0 lead off a free-position shot, the Crusaders responded by scoring five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 14:21 left in the first half. Zebrowski tied the game at 1-1, while Ryan then gave the Crusaders the lead. Hennessey increased the lead when she found the back of the net off a pass by Shea with 19:37 remaining. Ryan then scored off a pass from Zebrowski for her second goal of the contest to make it a 4-1 game. After junior captain Maddie Carrellas (Middletown, R.I.) gave the Crusaders a four-goal lead, Sukonik ended the scoring streak by netting a free-position goal for the Mountain Hawks. With just 17 seconds left, Shea scored a goal as the Crusaders took a 6-2 lead to the half.

The Mountain Hawks cut the Crusader lead to 6-4 when they netted the first two goals of the second half. After Hennessey made it a 7-4 contest on a free-position shot, Sukonik scored off a pass from Anna Patterson with 14:05 left. But Hennessey increased the lead to 8-5 when she netted a free-position goal for her team-best third game-winner of the season. Hennessey now has five hat-tricks this season and seven for her career. After Lehigh made it a one-goal game with two straight goals, Zebrowski increased the lead to 9-7 with her second goal of the game with 58 seconds remaining. Zebrowski then netted her team-best seventh hat-trick of the season and the 13th of her career with 25 seconds left for the 10-7 final score.

Along with 10 saves, Weber posted a .588 save percentage and improved to 7-6 this season. Her seven victories are tied for seventh all-time for a season at the school. MaryLeah DiNisco posted eight saves for Lehigh. Each team tallied 30 shots, while the Mountain Hawks picked up 20 ground balls and Holy Cross posted 11. Lehigh secured 12 draw controls and the Crusaders recorded seven. Holy Cross went 2-5 on free-position shots and Lehigh went 3-8.

The Crusaders return to action when they travel to New Britain, Conn., for a non-conference game versus Central Connecticut on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Arute Field.
