Women's Lacrosse Falls To Colgate, 12-11

HAMILTON, N.Y. – After outscoring the Raiders 9-4 in the first half, the Crusaders were unable to hold onto the lead as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to  Colgate, 12-11, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at Tyler's Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-5 overall (1-1 PL), while the Raiders improve to 2-8 overall (2-1 PL).

Freshman Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) led the Crusaders with five goals and senior Kayla DiBari (Holderness, N.H.) tallied one goal and four assists. Junior captain Maddie Carrellas (Middletown, R.I.) posted two goals, while senior Caitie Shea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and sophomore Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) each scored one goal. Junior Taylor Zebrowski (Verona, N.J.) was also strong for the Crusaders with one assist and one goal. 

Ryan netted the first goal of the game in the opening minute off of an assist by DiBari, but was answered by Colgate's Katie Sullivan less than two minutes later. Hennessey scored at the 25:46 mark, as the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead, but Sullivan tied the game again on an unassisted goal. Two consecutive goals by Ryan and Carrellas gave  Holy Cross a 4-2 advantage with 18:34 remaining in the first half. Colgate's Quincey Spagnoletti scored on an unassisted goal before Carrellas and Zebrowski scored  back-to-back goals to give the Crusaders a 6-3 lead. Courtney Miller scored for the Raiders with 6:30 remaining in the half before Holy Cross netted three unanswered goals, all assisted by DiBari. Ryan scored with 5:08 left, giving the Crusaders a 7-4 advantage, before Shea netted a goal less than a minute later. Ryan scored with five seconds left, as Holy Cross ended the first half with a 9-4 advantage.

The Raiders were led by sophomore Amanda O'Sullivan who tallied four goals in the second half, including two consecutive free-position shots in the opening minutes. With two unassisted goals by Ryan and DiBari two minutes later, Holy Cross widened the lead 11-6. Colgate then took control with 23:17 remaining, as they scored six unanswered goals to bring the game to its 12-11 finish.

Sophomore goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) made four saves for the Crusaders, while Jennie Berglin posted 11 for the Raiders. Holy Cross outshot Colgate, 26-21, while Colgate picked up 20 ground balls and the Crusaders posted 12. The Crusaders posted 13 draw controls and Colgate tallied 12. Holy Cross went 13-15 in clear attempts and Colgate went 15-17. Both teams went 3-4 on free-position shots.

The Crusaders return to action on Monday, March 26, when they play California-Davis at Holy Cross Field at 4:00 p.m.
