Cambridge, Mass. - The Harvard women's lacrosse team exploded for 17 goals - its best offensive output since the 1997 season - and cruised to a 17-9 win over Holy Cross on Thursday afternoon at Jordan Field. The Crusaders fall to 2-1 overall on the season while the Crimson improve to 1-1 on the year.

Sophomore Amy Archambault led Holy Cross with three goals and Patricia Sutton and Carolyn Smirti both added two scores each. Kelly Winslow and freshman Calley Benoit also chipped in with goals for the Crusaders.

The Crimson got on top quickly, with sophomore Tara Schoen scoring goals 19 and 35 seconds into the game. Holy Cross came back to tie it at 2-2, but sophomore Caroline Simmons scored 42 seconds later to start Harvard's big run. After two straight goals from Natalie Curtis and two in a row from Kaitlin Martin, Simmons netted the second of her four tallies to make it 8-2 with 14:28 remaining in the half.

Holy Cross scored four of the next five goals - two by Sutton - to pull within three at 9-6 with less than four minutes on the clock, but Martin and Curtis converted free position shots to take an 11-6 advantage into the half. Harvard goalie Kathryn Tylander made 13 saves and kept the Crusaders from getting closer than four the rest of the way.

The Crimson outscored Holy Cross, 6-3, after the break, with Jacqueline Hehir and Sarah Bancroft netting goals.

Holy Cross goalie Megan Orr stopped 13 shots, and fellow junior Darcy Wolcott caused three Crimson turnovers.

The Crusaders travel to Wellington, Fla., on Monday, March 6 for a 9:00 a.m. game against Sacred Heart.
