Women's Lacrosse Falls Just Short To Lehigh, 9-8, In PL Semifinals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Taylor Zebrowski (Verona, N.J.) pulled the Crusaders to within one goal with 5:40 left in the second half, but the Mountain Hawks were able to hold on to the ball and their one-goal lead for the last 4:59 of the game as the No. 4 seed Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to No. 1 seed Lehigh, 9-8, on Friday evening in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pa. With the loss, the Crusaders conclude the season 6-11 overall, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 14-3 overall and will play Navy on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the Patriot League Tournament title.

Zebrowski led the Crusaders with three goals and one assist for four points, while senior Katie Gardner (Garden City, N.Y.) scored three goals. Gardner recorded at least one point in her last 20 games and finishes the season with a career-best 51 points to lead the team. Senior Megan Fenton (Bridgewater, N.J.) and sophomore Kat Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each scored one goal as Sutton extended her goal scoring streak to 29 straight games. Freshman Maddie Carrellas (Middletown, R.I.) recorded one assist. Junior Meg O'Leary (Longmeadow, Mass.) led the Crusaders with two caused turnovers.

Lehigh was led by Inneke Carmola and Anna Patterson who each scored two goals.

After Carmola gave the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead, Zebrowski tied the game at 1-1. Lehigh then scored three straight goals to move out to a 4-1 advantage with 18:06 to go in the first half. The Crusaders then answered with four consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead with 3:16 left in the half. Gardner, Fenton, Sutton and Zebrowski found the back of the net for Holy Cross. But with 2:06 remaining, Kelly Draper scored as the game went to the half tied at 5-5.

Carmola scored the first goal of the second half to give Lehigh a 6-5 lead, but Gardner tied the game at 6-6 off a pass by Zebrowski. After the Mountain Hawks netted two goals to make it an 8-6 contest, Gardner recorded her third goal of the game to make it a one-goal contest with 9:20 left. Carrellas earned an assist on the goal. With 8:02 to go, Patterson scored the eventual game-winner off a pass from Draper. After Zebrowski scored her third goal of the game with 5:40 left to make the score 9-8, junior Annie Boylan (Andover, Mass.) secured the draw control with 5:38 remaining. But Lehigh goalie MaryLeah DiNisco made a key save with 4:59 to go. The Mountain Hawks were then able to keep the ball for the rest of the game for the 9-8 victory. 

Junior goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made nine saves. Kelsy Ferris stopped two shots in the first 27:23 for Lehigh, while DiNisco made four saves in the last 32:37 to earn the win. Lehigh outshot Holy Cross, 28-17, while each team earned 12 ground balls. The Mountain Hawks secured 10 draw controls and the Crusaders recorded nine.
