Steven Riley is in his third year as the director of bands at the College of the Holy Cross in 2017-2018. He directs the marching band, pep band and concert band, teaches applied clarinet and conducting lessons, and facilitates weekly clinics in the fundamentals of marching percussion.

Prior to his time at Holy Cross, Riley studied at the University of Iowa where he held the Myron D. Welch conducting fellowship. While at Iowa, he earned his master’s degree and doctorate of musical arts in band conducting, conducted for the office of the President of the United States, was twice named a Top 10 Finalist in the National Band Association’s Young Conductor Mentor Project and was published in the peer-reviewed section of the National Band Association Journal. Furthermore, he designed halftime shows performed by the Hawkeye Marching Band, toured with the Iowa Pep Band in NCAA and Big Ten Conference tournaments, and wrote his thesis on the professional career of Gary E. Smith, director emeritus of the University of Illinois Marching Illini.

Before attending Iowa, Riley was the director of instrumental music at Johnsburg High School in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. During his time in Johnsburg, his ensembles performed in various music festivals across the state of Illinois, performed with guest artists, and toured internationally in the Bahamas.

Riley is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in music education in 2008. He studied music education with Joseph Manfredo and clarinet with professor J. David Harris. Riley performed with the Marching Illini, Symphonic Band I, and the Wind Symphony. He was selected as drum major of the Marching Illini from 2005-2007 where he performed in the 2008 Rose Bowl.

Riley’s professional affiliations include memberships in the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, National Association for Music Education, College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
