Charles Bare is in his 15th year as the director of athletic media relations at the College of the Holy Cross in 2018-2019. He is responsible for the publicity of all 27 Crusader varsity sports, working directly with the men’s basketball, football and golf teams. Bare also oversees the production of the athletic department’s publications and the content of, the official athletic department web site.

During his time at Holy Cross, Bare has handled the publicity for two players who were finalists for the Walter Payton Award — Steve Silva (2005) and Dominic Randolph (2007, 2008 and 2009). He also worked with the men’s basketball team during its trips to the 2007 and 2016 NCAA Tournaments and 2005 National Invitation Tournament, and promoted the careers of Patriot League Players of the Year Kevin Hamilton (2005) and Keith Simmons (2007).

Bare came to Holy Cross after spending six years at the University of Massachusetts. During the 2003-2004 school year, he served as the interim director of athletic media relations for UMass, overseeing all public relations activities, information services and publications for the athletic department. Over the previous five years, Bare was an assistant director of athletic media relations, working extensively with the football, basketball and baseball teams, while supervising the media relations activities for a number of other sports. His 2000, 2001 and 2003 football media guides were rated the nation’s second-best in Division I-AA, while the 2004 guide placed third.

Prior to his time at UMass, Bare spent two years as assistant sports information director at the University of Virginia. During his time at Virginia, Bare handled the publicity for two national players of the year in men’s soccer — Mike Fisher (1996) and Ben Olsen (1997). He previously worked at UMass from 1994-1996, spending two years as an intern in the media relations office.

Bare graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1994. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a concentration in business administration, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America, the Football Writers Association of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Bare and his wife, Talene, have one daughter (Adrianna) and one son (Jackson).
