Softball Defeated By Florida International And Florida Gulf Coast

The Lead:  Senior second baseman Emily Krisanda led the Crusaders with two hits, but the Holy Cross softball team fell to Florida International, 14-0 in their first game of the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.


  • Florida International jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two on base, Kasandra Castle smashed a home run to center field to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. Florida International plated another score on a throwing error to expand out to a four-run lead in the opening inning.
  • The Panthers tacked on another pair of runs on two errors in second inning before tallying three more scores in the top of the fourth inning to move out to a 9-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Holy Cross got runners on second and third base with a single by Krisanda, followed by a double shot off the right field wall by junior first baseman Taylor Moss. However, Florida International found the next two outs to end the inning.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, the Panthers recorded five more runs on two more homers to capture the 14-0 win.


  • The Panthers led, 11-4 in hits.
  • Holy Cross left three runners on base, while Florida International left six.
  • Sophomore Alexandra Held notched four strikeouts through 4.1 innings tossed, but allowed seven  earned runs and took the loss for Holy Cross.
  • Megan Kugelmann secured the win for the Panthers, pitching four innings and recording three strikeouts.

The Lead: Both Moss and Krisanda each posted a .500 batting average on two hits and two RBIs to lead the Crusaders, but the Holy Cross softball team dropped a 12-9 decision to Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. on Tuesday.


  • Both sides battled to start the game with each team scoring runs in the first three innings.
  • The Crusaders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning while registering three hits. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Wahler hit an infield single before Moss brought her home on a double to center field.
  • The Eagles responded in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homerun hit by Erica Ward, giving Florida Gulf Coast a 3-1 lead.
  • Holy Cross then rallied for five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-3 lead. With two outs, the Crusaders loaded the bases before Krisanda brought in two runs on a single to right field. Moss plated another run on a line drive down the left field line before junior third baseman Mandy McCarthy smashed a double to left field to plate two more runs for Holy Cross.
  • However, Florida Gulf Coast matched the Crusaders’ five runs in the bottom of the second inning on five hits to regain the lead with the score, 8-6.
  • Holy Cross answered with a two-run spurt in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 8-8. After getting on base with her first career hit, Held scored on an error by the third baseman before senior right fielder Kylee Malouf scored on a sacrifice fly on a foul ball hit by sophomore center fielder Jaclyn Brewster.
  • Once again, the Eagles notched a pair of runs to take a 10-8 lead on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.
  • The action picked up in the bottom of the fifth inning with Florida Gulf Coast recording a run before Holy Cross plated the following run on a sacrifice fly hit by junior left fielder Gabby Muniz in the top of the sixth inning, as the Crusaders trailed by two runs (11-9).
  • The Eagles tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth, as Holy Cross was unable to overcome the deficit and fell, 12-9.


  • Hits were tied at 14-14, as both sides left seven runners on base.
  • Junior pitcher Katy Watson took the loss for Holy Cross, pitching for three innings, while allowing 10 earned runs.
  • Taylor Wade pitched six innings for Florida Gulf Coast and tallied four strikeouts to earn the win.


  • The Crusaders return to the Florida Gulf Coast’s Softball Complex tomorrow for two more games. Holy Cross will face Ball State at 2:30 p.m. before concluding action at the invitational with a second contest against the Eagles at 5:00 p.m.
