Tess MacKay Posts Eight Points As Crusaders Tally 14-5 Victory At Vermont

The Lead: Senior captain Tess MacKay posted a career-best seven goals and one assist for a career-high eight points as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 14-5, on Tuesday afternoon. The last time a Crusader scored seven goals was Sara Hennessey on April 7, 2012, in a 20-5 win over Bucknell, while the last time a Crusader posted eight points was Katie Gardner on April 17, 2010, in a 13-4 victory versus Lafayette.



  • After Meredith Moore gave the Catamounts an early 1-0 lead, the Crusaders netted three straight goals to move out to a 3-1 advantage with 13:13 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Baker Earl scored on a free-position shot, while MacKay found the back of the net off a pass by Earl and freshman Audrey Mandaro posted a goal.  
  • Moore then cut the Crusader lead to 3-2 with her second goal of the game, but the Crusaders closed out the half with the next five goals to take a 8-2 lead to the intermission. The goals were scored by MacKay, Mandaro off a pass by senior Mary Patalita, freshman Bryn Carroll off a pass from MacKay, Earl on a free-position shot and Patalita.
  • Junior Kerianne Moran and MacKay each scored a goal to increase the lead to 10-2 with 27:38 remaining in the second half. Senior captain Maddie Ward posted an assist on the goal by MacKay.
  • After Moore tallied a hat-trick with her third goal of the game, MacKay found the back of the net for the fourth time.
  • Bailey Saneman then posted a goal for the Catamounts, but MacKay scored off a pass by Mandaro to make it a 12-4 contest with 11:18 left.
  • After Elena McWright scored for Vermont, MacKay netted the last two goals of the game for the 14-5 final score. Sophomore Keely Connors posted an assist on MacKay’s first goal.


  • Holy Cross outshot Vermont, 32-20. 
  • Junior captain Julia Maloney made seven saves for the Crusaders to earn the win, while Maddy Kuras posted four saves and Catherine Green tallied six saves.
  • Senior captain Anna Johnson posted four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior Maddy Smith recorded four ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. 
  • Holy Cross secured 16 draw controls, while Vermont had five. Vermont recorded 18 ground balls, while Holy Cross picked up 15. 
  • The Crusaders went 2-2 on free-position shots, while the Catamounts went 3-5. 


  • The Crusaders are off to their best start to a season in four years when they were also 4-3 in 2013.
  • The Crusaders are now 9-3 all-time versus Vermont.
  • Moran scored her first collegiate goal.
  • Carroll’s game winner was the first of her collegiate career.
  • The hat trick by MacKay was her third of the season and the seventh of her career. 
  • Earl and Mandaro each tallied a career-best three points.


  • The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 11 when they host Ohio State at 12:00 p.m., for the first ever meeting between the two programs.
