WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit with a pair of power play goals, but RIT’s Kandice Sheriff broke the deadlock with just 1:47 left in regulation, notching the game winner late in the third to hand the Crusaders a 3-2 loss.

  • RIT scored twice within a span of 2:12 to open up a 2-0 lead early in the first period. Baylee Trani scored the opening tally just over three minutes in, assisted by Logan Land.
  • Brittney Gout doubled RIT’s lead with her first goal of the season at the 5:18 mark, with the helpers coming from Sheriff and Jordan Marchese.
  • Holy Cross junior winger Maeve Reilly cut the Crusaders’ deficit in half, 2-1, elevating her shot over RIT goalie Jessi O’Leary (27 saves) off a pass from Tori Messina (Hannah Gillis).
  • Midway through the second, Holy Cross goalie Tessie Salatas (28 saves) turned away a 2-on-1 breakaway shot from Brooke Baker to maintain the 2-1 margin.
  • Junior Julie Matthias tied the game for the hosts early in the third on the power play, stealing the puck just inside the offensive blue line for a breakaway opportunity. The junior center deked O’Leary to slip the puck in from the left side and knot the game at 2-2 in the fourth minute.
  • Sheriff dealt the heartbreaking blow with less than two minutes to play in the contest, capitalizing on a turnover in the neutral zone and skating in alone down right side. Sheriff crossed in front of the crease and beat Salatas stickside.

  • The weekend set was a historic one for the Crusaders, as it marked their first series as a Division I program and their first series competing against a Division I opponent.
  • The Tigers edged the Crusaders in shots, 31-29, despite Holy Cross outshooting RIT in the opening stanza, 13-10.
  • The Crusaders finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play, totaling eight shots. RIT went 0-for-3 (5 shots).
  • The Tigers dominated on the draw, winning 32 faceoffs to Holy Cross’ 14. Senior captain Kara Violette led the home side with 10 faceoff wins, while Kendall Cornine and Gout each had 10 for the visitors.
  • Matthias’s third-period goal was her first of the season and 31st of her career. Reilly has now scored in each of the first two games of the 2017-18 campaign (15 career tallies).

The Crusaders will be back in action Friday, Oct. 13 when they travel to Hanover, N.H., to take on Dartmouth (6 p.m.).
