WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at home Friday night. Freshman outside hitter Katie Kerins led the Crusaders with 13 kills, and freshman middle hitter Clare Honan recorded 12 kills (.417 hitting percentage) and five blocks. Freshman libero Sophie VanSeveren posted 22 digs for the Crusaders. Julia Pressly led the Mountain Hawks with 11 kills on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a kill by junior middle blocker Allie Barry, Lehigh took a timeout with the score at 9-6. Later in the first set, Lehigh came back and scored three points in a row to make the score 14-12. The Mountain Hawks then took a 21-20 lead after a kill by Pressly. Holy Cross came back and tied the set 23-23 and went on to take the first set 26-24.
Both teams battled back and forth in the second set, but the Mountain Hawks were able to tie the match 1-1 after taking the second set 25-18.
The Crusaders kept the third set close after a kill by freshman outside hitter Emmerson Smith to make the score 15-14 in favor of Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks finished the third set from a kill and won 25-19.
Lehigh created a 17-11 lead in the fourth set and held Holy Cross to 14 points. The Mountain Hawks secured the victory with a 25-14 win in the fourth set.
The Crusaders will host their annual Cancer Awareness match Saturday, Oct. 21 at 6:05 p.m. in the Hart Center.
