WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team fell to American International, 4-2, at the Hart Center on Saturday night.  

The Yellow Jackets (8-12-2, 7-8-2 AHC) started the scoring with a power play goal nearly five minutes into the opening period. American International extended their lead with a goal at the midway point of the first period. Holy Cross (7-8-7, 6-4-6 AHC) responded with a goal to close the first period when Dalton Skelly added his first strike of the season.

In the second period, the Yellow Jackets took back their two goal lead. But, the Crusaders pushed the game within one late in the third period. The comeback was not enough as AIC added an empty net goal with three seconds remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1-0 AIC (1st, 5:56, PP): Darius Davidson collected a blocked shot and fired a wrist shot in.

2-0 AIC (1st, 10:59, EV): Jared Pike received a pass from below the goal line and took a one-timer that went just under the crossbar.

2-1 HC (1st, 19:04, EV): Scott Pooley passed to a breaking Michael Laffin in the crease who ripped a shot off of AIC’s Stefano Durante’s pad and collected his own rebound. Lafffin then sent the puck up the half wall for Dalton Skelly to send a wrist shot into the net.  

3-1 AIC (2nd, 11:51, PP): On a four-on-three situation, Yellow Jacket Martin Melberg shot through a screen from the top of the right faceoff circle.

3-2 HC (3rd, 18:42, EX): On a five-on-four opportunity, Charlie Barrow rushed the zone to shoot the puck off of Durante’s pad and to Michale Laffin’s stick. Laffin redirected the puck to Scott Pooley for a one-timer into the back of the net.

4-2 AIC (3rd, 19:57, EN): With Berrafato pulled, the Yellow Jackets won a defensive zone faceoff and Kyle Stephan scored from the defensive blue line.

TALKING POINTS

  • Paul Berrafato played in his 100th game and made 32 saves.
  • Dalton Skelly scored his first goal of the season.
  • Michael Laffin has recorded nine points in the Crusaders’ last five games, with two assists on the night.

Holy Cross close the Atlantic Hockey series with Sacred Heart in a home-and-home. The Crusaders will play in Bridgeport, Conn. On Jan. 12 at 7:05 p.m. and return to the Hart Center on Jan. 13 for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
