BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 3-1, at the Webster Bank Arena on Friday night.

Holy Cross (8-8-7, 7-4-6 AHC) scored a power play goal early in the first period and extended its lead to 2-0 just over four minutes into the second period. Sacred Heart (5-13-4, 3-9-4 AHC) responded more than ten minutes later to cut the Crusader lead to 2-1.

In the third period, the team’s battled back-and-forth with the Pioneers holding a 12-11 advantage in shots. The Crusaders added an empty net goal with three seconds to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1-0 HC (1st, 2:32, PP): T.J. Moore worked the puck along the blue line to Spencer Trapp at the center point. Trapp sent the puck towards the goal for a Scott Pooley tip shot that created a juicy rebound. Danny Lopez was wide open below the left faceoff dot and the senior forward fired a wrist shot into the yawning net.

2-0 HC (2nd, 4:14, EV): Charlie Barrow sent a stretch breakout pass from the defensive corner to Lopez on the offensive blue line. Lopez then walked the puck into the slot and deked around the Sacred Heart defense for a top-shelf shot past Perry.

2-1 SHU (2nd, 16:33, EV): After a scrum on the half wall, the puck popped to Alex Bates on the point, who sent a wrist shot through traffic that beat Paul Berrafato.

3-1 HC (3rd, 19:57, EN): Michael Laffin grabbed the puck from mid-air in the neutral zone and skated with Lopez on a two-on-one. Once they beat the defender, Lopez skated into the slot and tapped the puck into the open net.
