WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Lauren Manis led the Holy Cross women’s basketball team with 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but the Crusaders came up short to American, 68-63 in overtime.

Manis earned her sixth double-double of the season for Holy Cross (9-11, 4-5), posting 18 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. Senior Infiniti Thomas-Waheed posted her third double-double of the year with 15 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds. Senior Tricia Byrne scored in double figures for the Crusaders, posting 14 points while shooting 5-for-7 from the field. American (16-4, 9-0) was led by Emily Kinneston, who scored 18 points while shooting 6-for-12. Cecliy Carl also had a strong night for the Eagles, posting 17 points and 13 rebounds. 

Holy Cross shot 39.1% (25-64) on the night, while American posted 36.9% (24-65) shooting. From three-point range, the Crusaders hit 31.8% (7-22) while holding the Eagles to 24.0% (6-25). American shot 73.7% (14-19) of its free throws, while Holy Cross hit 54.5% (6-11) of its attempts from the charity stripe.

WOMAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES

  • Following the game, Manis was selected as the Woman of the Match presented the United States Marines.
  • She earned a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while adding a pair of blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the opening quarter, Holy Cross stormed out to a 15-5 lead over the Eagles, but American responded with a 13-3 run to tie the game at 18 heading into the second.
  • The Crusaders led by three points in the second quarter, but the Eagles scored a pair of layups in the last minute to take a 31-30 lead just before halftime.
  • After Holy Cross tied the game with just under seven minutes to play in the third, the Eagles scored eight-straight and maintained their lead to head into the fourth up 47-40.
  • Holy Cross erased a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 57 and send it into overtime.
  • The Crusaders took a one-point lead early in the overtime period and tied it with 3:26 to play, but American scored five straight to give them the edge to close out the narrow victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The lead changed a total of eight times, with the score tying on five occasions.
  • American led for 22:16 of playing time, while Holy Cross held the lead for 14:57.
  • The Crusaders scored just five points off the bench, with 92% (58 of 63 points) of its offense coming from their starters.
