ERIE, Pa. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated by Mercyhurst, 6-5, on Friday night.

The Crusaders (12-12-7, 11-8-6 AHC) opened the game with two goals for an early lead. The Lakers (13-10-4, 10-8-4 AHC) battled back to get on the board in the first period but Holy Cross continued to lead, 2-1, going into the second.

Mercyhurst scored two more goals in the second period to take the advantage going into the final 20 minutes.

The Crusaders tied it up at 3-3, but the Lakers scored three more quick goals in the third to take a 6-3 lead. Holy Cross battled back but came up short in the high-scoring night, finishing the game at 6-5.

1-0 HC (1st, 1:18, EV): Johnny Coughlin set up a two-on-one for T.J. Moore and Kevin Darrar. Moore faked the Mercyhurst defensemen and then looked off the pass, but moved the puck across the crease to feed Darrar on the back door for a tap in.

2-0 HC (1st, 15:06, EV): As the puck popped out to the neutral zone from the Crusaders’ offensive zone, both teams were in the midst of a line change. Dalton Skelly quickly moved the puck up the boards to Peter Crinella who entered the zone nearly uncontested. Crinella turned on a shot at the top of the faceoff circle and wristed a puck under the cross bar and down.

2-1 MU (1st, 17:08, PP): Meryhurst’s Les Lancaster picked up the puck at the center point and waited for a clear lane to the goal. Lancaster then quickly fired a shot to the top right corner of the net.

2-2 MU (2nd, 5:47, EV): From behind the goal, Jack Riley fed Brian Sienerth in the slot. Sieneth shot across the goal to score just inside the far post.

3-2 MU (2nd, 16:06, PP): After a scrum on the left side of the net, Paul Berrafato made multiple saves but the puck was left loose and an open Riley picked up the rebound and roofed the puck for a Lakers lead.

3-3 HC (3rd, 3:57, EV): Tommy Muratore worked the puck across the offensive blue line to Will Brophy on the near point. Brophy opened a lane for himself as he passed down the half wall to Danny Lopez, who moved it back to Brophy. The sophomore defenseman wristed a shot through traffic that snuck in by the near post for his first career tally.

4-3 MU (3rd, 7:56, EV): On a two-on-one, Wes Baker shot to the short side to beat Berrafato.

5-3 MU (3rd, 10:57, PP): Josh Lammon connected on a one-timer in the slot that went to the top corner of the goal.

6-3 MU (3rd, 13:30, PP): As the Crusaders were killing a four-on-three and the penalty expired, Bryan Sienerth found a puck at the back door to score a fourth power play tally for the Lakers.

6-4 HC (3rd, 14:40, EV): After a scrum in the far corner, Crinella moved the puck across the zone to Skelly on the point. Skelly released a shot the Crinella tipped in as he made his way across the crease.

6-5 HC (3rd, 18:19, EA): After a clear, Spencer Trapp rushed the puck up the ice and sent a pass from the far corner to the net. Ryan Ferrill connected on the other end of the pass at the near post and put the Crusaders within one.
