Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s soccer team was defeated by Brown on Tuesday night, 2-1. The Crusaders jumped to an early lead but could not hold off the Bears’ offense despite a seven-save effort from Henry Stutz.

In the 19th minute, Mason Brummett sent a hard pass into the box, where Simon Becher was waiting in coverage. Becher received the ball and used some fancy footwork to turn on the ball and fire into the net for his fourth goal of the season.

The Bears responded when Matthew Chow broke free and sent in two shots that Henry Stutz turned aside, but Derek Waleffe was there to even the score in the 25th minute.

Henry Stutz posted seven saves in the first 45 minutes of action.

In the 47th minute, Brown’s Malcolm Johnson received a cross from Chow. Johnson ran onto the ball and shot past Stutz for a 2-1 lead.

Despite entering the second half with a shot deficit of 14-1 in favor of Brown, Holy Cross held a 6-5 advantage in the second half.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross was outshot, 19-7.
  • The Crusaders had eight corner kicks to the Bears one.
  • Stutz recorded seven saves and Brown’s goalkeeper James Swomley posted two saves.

COACH KOOLMAN ON THE GAME:

“It is disappointing because I thought we had good rhythm in the first and then all of a sudden we gave it away. We scored a good goal and then the two goals that Brown scored we created for them by losing possession in key parts of the field. The other part of the game is belief. In the second half, we started playing with belief and we could create chances. The second half was better but we have to do that from the beginning.”

Holy Cross hits the road to take on Patriot League opponent American on Sat. Oct. 13 at 1:05 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
