WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men’s hockey team scored three powerplay goals to defeat the Dartmouth Big Green in non-conference action at the Hart Center. Senior forward Scott Pooley scored his first career hat-trick in the game, including two on the power play.
Despite taking a 3-0 lead in the first period, the Crusaders found themselves tied with the Big Green four minutes into the second frame, 3-3. With Paul Berrafato posting 30 saves and the team combining for 19 blocked shots, the Crusaders took back the lead and killed over a minute of six-on-five play to win, 5-3.
HC, 1-0: Pooley opened his hat-trick with a powerplay goal just under four minutes into the game. Danny Lopez rushed the zone and broke through the defense, was tripped up and then handed the puck off to Logan Ferguson. Ferguson sent the puck from the tops of the circles over to Pooley on the back door, where his shot bounced around the crease and into the goal.
HC, 2-0: Johnny Coughlin scored his first of the season with a slapshot from the point after a faceoff win by T.J. Moore.
HC, 3-0: Neil Robinson sent Pooley on a breakaway, where he sent a wrist shot over Dartmouth’s Devin Buffalo’s glove.
DC, 3-1: Daniel Warpecha snuck one past Berrafato and was assisted by Kevan Kilistoff.
DC, 3-2: Ryan Blankemeier scored on a rebound shot 39 seconds into the second period. He was helped by Corey Kalk and Brendan Less.
DC, 3-3: Kilistoff scored a power play goal, assisted by Cameron Roth and Joey Matthews.
HC, 4-3: On the powerplay, Pooley sent a puck across the crease that took a fortuitous bounce into the back of the net. Tommy Muratore and Ferguson picked up assists on the play.
HC, 5-3: Ryan Ferrill scored his first of the season when Kevin Darrar carried the puck off the half wall and towards the slot, let loose a shot that was blocked and fell onto the stick of Ferrill. Ferrill tapped the puck in just outside the near post for a two-goal lead.
The Crusaders went 3-5 on the powerplay. Prior to the game, the team has only scored one powerplay goal.
Scott Pooley is the 18th Crusader to notch a hat trick since going Division I.
Logan Ferguson tallied his first multi-point game, with two assists.
The Crusaders tallied 10 goals in their last two games. Pooley has scored five of those.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Berrafato made 30 saves to Buffalo’s 24.
Holy Cross had four penalties to Dartmouth’s five.
The Crusaders allowed one powerplay goal and scored three of their own.
Holy Cross posted a season-high 19 blocked shots.
Ten Crusaders tallied at least one point.
The Crusaders will play their first road game of the season at Hobey Baker Rink to take on Princeton on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 p.m.
