Football Team Concludes Spring Drills

Holy Cross Athletics   04-14-2018

WORCESTER, Mass. – The defense posted a 36-30 victory over the offense, as the Holy Cross football team played its annual spring game at Fitton Field. The defense totaled eight quarterback sacks on the afternoon, led by junior linebacker Matt Johnson with three sacks. Junior quarterback Emmett Clifford scored the lone touchdown of the day on a two-yard run.

"What we were looking to do today was evaluate our skill, our toughness and our consistency," said head coach Bob Chesney. "I think we saw an array of that from a number of different guys. Now we need to continue to evaluate ourselves and keep working to get better."

Along with any traditional points scored, the offense received two points for an explosive play over 20 yards and one point for a first down. The defense received four points for a turnover, two points for a sack and two points for a three-and-out.

The game also included a one-on-one challenge of wide receivers against defensive backs, and a big man punt catching challenge. The defense won both challenges, worth five points each.

Prior to the game, the Crusaders held a free kids' clinic with approximately 200 youngsters in attendance. The team then held a postgame autograph session, followed by its annual spring cookout.

Holy Cross has now concluded spring practice, and is scheduled to open the 2018 season when it travels to Colgate on Sept. 1.
