WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team fell, 1-0, to Columbia Sunday afternoon in the Crusaders’ home opener.
For the first time this season the Crusaders took more shots than their opponent, but just were unable to find the back of the net. Senior Emily Loprete and junior Madeline Alderfer led the way for Holy Cross with four shots each. Loprete and fellow senior Suzanne Noone each had three shots on goal.
Columbia would score the decisive goal just eight minutes into the game after earning a corner. The ball was played in and Kelly McCarthy found Jamie McCormick who scored for the Lions.
The Crusaders would turn on the pressure in the second half, outshooting Columbia 12-6 and earning seven corners to the Lions’ five.
The game came down to one final corner as time expired. Loprete played the ball in to the top of the circle, but a Columbia defender arrived at the same time as the pass and was able to knock it away from Holy Cross and out of the circle. The ref blew his whistle to end it.
The Crusaders will take on LIU Brooklyn this Friday at home under the lights at 6:05 p.m.
