WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women’s soccer team fell, 1-0, in its Patriot League opener Thursday afternoon at Navy.

The game had been originally scheduled for this coming Saturday, but the teams agreed to move the game to Thursday in an attempt to avoid the weekend’s impending severe weather.

The game was tightly contested the whole way through. The first half ended tied at zero, with both teams taking seven shots in the first period of play.

Navy got on the board in the second half when, in the 61st minute, Baseley McClaskey took a free kick near midfield that she sent all the way into the box. Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Lettieri got a hand on it, but the ball was hit too hard and it still found its way into the back of the net.

The Crusaders would create a few more chances in the remaining minutes, but none materialized into a goal.

Holy Cross will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 22 with its third road game in a row when the Crusaders take on Lafayette at 3:00 p.m.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The game ended with Navy holding the slight advantage in shots, 14-13, and shots on goal, 6-2.
  • The two sides were even in corners with three apiece.
  • Lettieri made five saves on the day to Navy Sydney Fortson’s two.
