David Berard Contract Extended
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross director of athletics Nathan Pine has announced that men’s ice hockey head coach David Berard has agreed to a contract extension through the 2022 season. Berard is entering his fifth year at the helm of the Crusaders’ men’s ice hockey program.
“We are encouraged by the steady progress of our men’s hockey program under David’s leadership,” said Pine. “He has been an impactful mentor, a strong motivator and a tremendous resource for our student-athletes during his time at Holy Cross. We look forward to continued success and league championships to come under his direction.”
In his time at Holy Cross, Berard has led the Crusaders to a 59-62-24 record and a 51-38-23 mark in Atlantic Hockey action. Berard has led the program to four-consecutive Atlantic Hockey playoff berths, including three-consecutive quarterfinal appearances. Holy Cross has also posted four-straight winning league records for the first time in program history during Berard’s tenure.
“I am honored to receive the contract extension to continue as the head coach of the men’s hockey program,” said Berard. “I want to give special thanks and gratitude to Nathan Pine for his steadfast belief in me and the program. I would also like to thank our coaching staff, support staff and players from the past four years. This is a recognition of quality work done by a number of outstanding people.
“Lastly, thank you to our alumni, donors and friends of the program who have supported us at a record level and whose engagement sets our program apart. I look forward to continuing to lead the program in the coming years and building on the positive momentum we have established. The future is bright, and I am excited to be a part of it.”
In his time with Holy Cross, Berard has coached four All-Atlantic Hockey selections, three Walter Brown Award semifinalists, a New England Hockey Writers’ Paul Hines Award winner, and a Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award winner. He has also sent 12 Crusaders into the professional ranks.
Under Berard’s leadership, the Crusaders have also excelled in the classroom, with 77 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team selections and five AHCA All-American Scholars in the last four seasons. Berard’s teams have also been involved with community service initiatives such as Pink the Rink, Working for Worcester, Worcester After School Program, and the UMass Memorial Cancer Walk. The Crusaders are also involved with youth programs such as the East Coast Jumbos and Worcester Junior Crusaders.
Berard has made a significant impact with alumni, as well, as he spearheads the annual golf outing and has implemented alumni weekend. Both events have seen yearly growth, reaching record numbers of attendance and engagement.
Berard and the Crusaders open the 2018-2019 season with an Atlantic Hockey series against Canisius on Oct. 12 at 7:05 p.m. and Oct. 13 at 5:05 p.m.
