Holy Cross Athletics   06-16-2017

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross baseball Class of 2017 graduate Anthony Critelli has been named the winner of the 2017 Senior CLASS Award. The winner was chosen based on a combination of votes from fans, Division I head coaches and members of the national media. Critelli is the first student-athlete from Holy Cross to win the award.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Critelli finished the 2017 season leading the Crusaders with a .310 batting average and a .540 slugging percentage. He also led the team with 13 doubles and nine home runs while tallying 36 runs batted in and 32 runs scored. He helped lead the Crusaders to their first Patriot League Championship in program history, securing their first bid to the NCAA Tournament since 1978. Critelli and the Crusaders defeated No. 25 Nebraska for their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1978, and first win over a Big Ten opponent since the 1952 College World Series. He was named first team All-Patriot League for the third-straight year, and was also named to the Patriot League All-Tournament team despite missing the start of the 2017 season due to injury.

Critelli participated in the team's tradition of shaving their heads to help raise awareness for cancer research, as the Crusaders worked to raise money this season for the Vs. Cancer Foundation. This season Holy Cross also hosted an ALS Awareness game in support of the Pete Frates Foundation, and a Military Appreciation game in which the team sold customized hats with proceeds benefiting the Home Base Program. The team has also been involved with Team IMPACT and previously with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Critelli also showed commitment in the classroom, having been named to the 2016 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll after posting a GPA of 3.33.
