WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s basketball team allowed its fewest points of the season as the Crusaders defeated Patriot League foe Lehigh on Friday night.

Sophomore Lauren Manis led Holy Cross (7-7, 2-1) with 18 points and eight rebounds while tallying three steals. Sophomore Madalyn Smith shot a perfect 4-for-4 to add nine points with a game-high four assists. Freshman Jenay Faulkner also had a strong night offensively, tallying nine points and adding three steals. Lehigh (8-6, 2-1) was led by Camryn Buhr, who registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Gena Grundhoffer also scored in double digits, notching 10 points while shooting 5-for-10.

Holy Cross shot 42% (21-50) for the game, while the Mountain Hawks shot 31% (18-58). The Crusaders were nearly perfect at the charity stripe, hitting 90.0% (9-10) of their free throws. Holy Cross held the edge in rebounding, 38-36.

WOMAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES

  • Following the game, Manis was selected as the Woman of the Match presented the United States Marines.
  • She tallied a game-high 18 points with eight rebounds and three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders got out to a strong start, leading by as many as 15 points in the first quarter. Holy Cross led Lehigh 25-14 following the first 10 minutes of play.
  • In the second quarter, the Crusaders maintained their advantage and led by 19 points before heading to the locker room at halftime up 35-20.
  • Lehigh led off the third quarter with 10-straight points, coming within five points on two occasions. The Crusaders held onto their lead, and entered the fourth quarter up 48-40.
  • The Mountain Hawks started off the fourth with a 6-2 run and cut the deficit to just three points with two minutes to play, but the Crusaders would not let them any closer and held on for the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • 49 is the fewest points Holy Cross has allowed since defeating Lehigh 65-47 last season on Jan. 14.
  • In the second quarter, the Crusaders held the Mountain Hawks to just 7.1% (1-for-14) shooting from the field.
  • Holy Cross added 21 points off turnovers, scored 13 points on second chance opportunities and eight points on fast breaks.
