Volleyball Drops Patriot League Opener
EASTON, Pa. – The Holy Cross volleyball team dropped their first Patriot League match against Lafayette, 3-1. Freshman middle blocker Clare Honan led the Crusaders with 14 kills and four digs. Freshman outside hitter Katie Kerins notched her fourth double-double on the season with 11 kills and 15 digs. On defense, freshman libero Sophie VanSeveren tallied 35 digs against the Leopards. VanSeveren currently leads the Patriot League in digs per set with 6.05.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Leopards started strong in the first set and jumped to a 9-4 lead after an attack error by the Crusaders. After an ace by freshman setter Bailey Steger, Holy Cross tied the set back up 11-11. With the momentum on their side, the Crusaders reached a 17-13 lead after a kill by junior middle hitter Kristen Somerville. The Leopards fought back to tie the set 21-21 after a kill by Lafayette’s Carly Kutschke. The set went back and forth, but the Leopards went on to capture the first set 25-23.
- The second set remained close between both teams. Lafayette took a timeout after a kill by Somerville, which put the Crusaders up by one point, 17-16. Holy Cross finished strong and took the second set 25-21 over Lafayette.
- The Crusaders started the third set off with a 5-0 run and held on to the lead until the Leopards tied the set 19-19 after an ace. Lafayette’s Tori Smith tied the set 24-24 after a kill. The Leopards finished the set off with three kills in a row and won 27-25.
- Holy Cross kept the fourth set close and evened the score 10-10 after a service error by Lafayette. The Leopards went on a 7-2 run to make the score 17-12. Lafayette kept their lead and went on to win the fourth set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
The Crusaders take on Lehigh Saturday, Sept. 23 in their second Patriot League match of the weekend. First serve is at 4:00 p.m.
