Women's Lacrosse Falls to Duke In NCAA Tournament Debut

DURHAM, N.C. - Kristen Waagbo, Leigh Jester and Katie Chrest combined to score 11 goals to lead the Duke women's lacrosse team to an 18-2 victory over Holy Cross in the First Round of the 2006 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium on the campus of Duke University.

Holy Cross concludes the 2006 campaign - its most successful in school history - with a 14-7 mark. Duke (17-2) advances to the Second Round of the Tournament where it will face James Madison at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 20.

Holy Cross junior midfielder and the 2006 Patriot League Player of the Year, Patricia Sutton, recorded a goal for the Crusaders, along with sophomore Amy Archambault.

Duke jumped out to a quick five goal lead in the first 8:07 before the game was delayed 30 minutes due to lightening in the area. When play resumed, the Blue Devils tacked on eight more goals, to take a commanding 11-1 lead with 6:51 left in the first half. Archambault spoiled the shutout with a strike at the 11:25 mark.

The game was then delayed once more after a thunderstorm consisting of heavy rain, hail and lightening moved through the area.

The teams once again took the field and Duke came up with two more scores in the final 6:51 of the half for a 14-1 advantage at the break.

The Blue Devils scored four more times in the second half for the 18-2 victory. Sutton scored for the Crusaders with 11:57 remaining in the game.

Holy Cross goalkeeper Megan Orr made 11 saves in goal for Holy Cross, after facing 43 shots on the afternoon.

Duke's Megan Huether finished the game with seven saves.

The Blue Devils had a 43-14 shot advantage and picked up 42 groundballs to the Crusaders' 24.
