Women's Lacrosse Defeats Colgate, 10-8, In PL Quarterfinal Game

WORCESTER, Mass. – With Holy Cross leading 8-3 in the second half, Colgate scored four straight goals to make it a one-goal game, but the Crusaders then outscored the Raiders 2-1 in the final 11:45 of play as the No. 4 seed Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated No. 5 seed Colgate, 10-8, on Tuesday afternoon in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals at Holy Cross Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 7-11 overall, while the Raiders conclude the season 7-9 overall. Also with the win, Holy Cross head coach Stephanie Ridolfi now has 100 career victories at Holy Cross.

The Crusaders will take on No. 1 seed and No. 12 nationally ranked Loyola (Md.) on Thursday, April 24 at 5:00 p.m., in Baltimore, Md., at the Ridley Athletic Complex as the Greyhounds are hosting the semifinals and championship game. No. 3 seed Boston University, which defeated No. 6 seed Lehigh, 14-9, in the other quarterfinal game, will play No. 2 seed Navy at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m. The champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Crusaders were led by junior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) who tallied three goals and two assists for five points, while senior captain Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) tallied three goals and one assist for four points. Ryan was strong defensively as she posted four caused turnovers and picked up a team-best four ground balls. Sophomore Jersey Burns (Salem, N.H.) also caused four turnovers.

The Raiders were led by Monica White who scored four goals. Lauren Gorajek tallied two goals and one assist for three points.

After Hennessey gave the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead with a goal on a free-position shot with 22:13 left in the first half, Gorajek tied the contest at 1-1 with 12:05 remaining. Holy Cross then netted three straight goals to move out to a 4-1 advantage. Freshman Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.), Hennessey and sophomore Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) each found the back of the net during this stretch. White then ended the Crusaders' scoring streak with her first goal of the game, but MacKay and Ryan then each scored a goal to increase the lead to 6-2. White scored a late goal as the Crusaders took a 6-3 lead to the half.

The Crusaders made it an 8-3 contest in the second half as Ryan and Hennessey each scored a goal. Hennessey's goal was her third of the game giving her five hat-tricks this season and 19 for her career. The Raiders then answered with four consecutive goals to cut the lead to 8-7 with 11:45 left. But with 9:34 remaining, freshman Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) ended the Raiders' scoring streak to make it a 9-7 game with her team-best second game-winner of the season. Ryan added an insurance goal with 8:02 left. Ryan has three hat-tricks this season and 14 for her career. White then scored the last goal of the game at 5:22 for the 10-8 final score. The Crusaders improve to 4-1 all-time versus Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament. The Crusaders are also 5-0 all-time in Patriot League Tournament games at home.    

Senior goalie Sarah Weber (Summit, N.J.) made two saves, while Jennie Berglin tallied six saves for the Raiders. Holy Cross outshot Colgate, 20-14, while the Crusaders secured 17 ground balls and the Raiders tallied 14. Colgate tallied 11 draw controls and the Crusaders posted nine. The Raiders went 2-4 on free-position shots and the Crusaders went 1-2.
