Jeffrey Barlok Named Head Swimming & Diving Coach
WORCESTER, Mass. – Director of Athletics Nathan Pine has announced that Jeffrey Barlok has been named the new head coach of the Holy Cross men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.
Barlok previously served as an assistant coach with the program for the last two seasons under former head coach Barry Parenteau, who retired from the post in June after 43 years of service. As an assistant with the Crusaders, Barlok helped manage all aspects of the programs, including leading all recruiting activities and collaborating with the College’s admissions and financial aid departments.
The program has taken a step forward over the past two seasons, and Barlok has played an integral role in the success of numerous standout swimmers, helping the programs to a combined 21 new school records during the 2017-18 season and 34 over the last two campaigns.
“Jeff has been an integral part of our swimming and diving coaching staff for the last two seasons and has been a guiding force in the development of our student-athletes in and out of the pool,” said Pine. “Jeff’s elevation into the head coaching role will provide important continuity for our programs as we continue to promote the intellectual, physical, spiritual and moral development of our student-athletes. I am excited to see our student-athletes grow under Jeff’s leadership.”
Barlok has held coaching positions in numerous organizations throughout his career and enters his new role with nearly 20 years of experience in various coaching capacities.
Prior to joining the Crusaders, he spent two years as the Director of Aquatics and Programming at the Glens Falls YMCA in Glens Falls, N.Y., where he also served as the head coach for the Gators Swim Team. There, Barlok directed all pool and aquatics operations, managed 80 swimmers of different ages and competition levels, and oversaw the department’s budgeting, staffing, community outreach and fundraising efforts.
Barlok also spent time as the head coach of the Stingrays Swim Team in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., from 2008-10, and coached at the collegiate level at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs from 1997-99. As an assistant at Skidmore, Barlok was responsible for on-deck coaching, meet entry, competitive strategic planning, and recruiting, as well as managing the College’s aquatics facility during competitions.
“I have enjoyed my first two years at Holy Cross working with the swimming and diving teams, and I am excited about the opportunity to lead the programs,” said Barlok. “It is an honor to be taking over squads that have been run by a legendary coach. Coach Parenteau has taught me a lot about coaching and life these past two years, and I intend to carry on his philosophy of being thankful for every day and appreciating what we have. The program is in a good place and poised for greatness. I look forward to leading a group of young men and women with such talent, both in and out of the pool.”
Barlok received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical Economics from Colgate University in 1988, where he was a four-year varsity letterwinner and served as a senior captain for the Raiders’ swim team. He and his wife, Tracy, who currently serves as the College’s Vice President for Advancement, reside in Shrewsbury, Mass., and have two children, Katie and Danny. Katie was a captain of the swimming team at Trinity College before graduating in 2016, while Danny is a rising senior on the Holy Cross baseball team and earned All-Patriot League honors in 2018.
