Men's Hockey Names Matt Grogan Volunteer Assistant Coach

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men’s hockey program has announced Matt Grogan as a volunteer assistant coach. He was a standout goalie at the University of Connecticut, where he won the Atlantic Hockey Top Goaltender Award, and brings professional playing experience.

"We are very excited to welcome Matt to our staff as our volunteer assistant coach,” said head coach David Berard. “I was fortunate to coach Matt at UConn for two years and watched him develop into one of the best goalies in Atlantic Hockey. I look forward to watching him start his coaching career at Holy Cross and work with our goaltenders to help them reach their full potential. His passion for the game, work ethic, knowledge and drive will serve him well as a coach."

Grogan has a vast background being an instructor and counselor at hockey camps and clinics. He was a camp instructor and counselor for the Stop It Goaltending Camp from 2010-2015 and had the same position for the Behind the Mask Goalie School from 2012-2016. He led goalie clinics for Australia Hockey in 2015 and was a Pro Crease instructor in 2013 and 2016. Grogan is currently a private goaltending instructor, an instructor for the CAN/AM Lake Placid, New York Hockey Camps and a director at Voity Goaltending. 

Grogan played at the professional level as a member of the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL in 2014 before playing for the Mississippi RiverKings of the SPHL for the 2015-2016 season. He was a goaltender for the Tulsa Oilers (ECHL) in 2016.

He was a top goalie at the Division I level at the University of Connecticut from 2009-2014. After the 2012-2013 season, he earned the Atlantic Hockey Top Goaltender Award by posting a 1.93 goals against average. He also received Atlantic Hockey All-Conference honors, was named the New England Hockey Journal Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year and the Goaltending Consultant Group Goaltender of the Year.

Grogan won Arizona High School Hockey Association First Team All-State honors, was an AHSHA All-Star and was the AHSHA Goaltender Breakaway Winner in high school before playing in the North American Hockey League for the Bismarck Bobcats from 2007-2009. He won the team’s Unsung Hero Award for his performance during the 2007-2008 season before winning the #2 Team Star Award the following season. He was a Robertson Cup Finalist and an NAHL Top Prospect in 2008-2009.
