Men's Hockey Drops 4-3 Game at St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated by St. Lawrence, 4-3, on Oct. 19 at Appleton Arena. Despite taking a 1-0 lead, the Saints tallied an early third period goal that decided the game. Peter Crinella led the Crusaders with one goal and one assist. Holy Cross tallied one goal on the power play, but St. Lawrence recorded two power play goals. Holy Cross drops to 1-2-0 overall and St. Lawrence improves to 1-2-0.
In the opening period Erkka Vänskä scored his first collegiate goal, while Conner Jean picked up his first collegiate point on the play. Slick also added an assist to complete the all-rookie goal midway through the first period.
The start of the second period saw a lot of action as St. Lawrence jumped to a 2-1 lead. The Saints scored in the opening minute and followed up with a shorthanded goal, both from Keenan Suthers. Holy Cross responded with a power play goal from Peter Crinella, 2-2.
Charlie Barrow put Holy Cross back on top with a nice move at the point but St. Lawrence evened the score, 3-3, with 1:40 to play in the second on a power play from Cade Gleekel.
St. Lawrence took the lead, 4-3, with 18 minutes to play in the third period.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 HC (1st – 10:36): From the corner, Jean fed a waiting Vanska in the high slot. Vanska quickly wristed the shot in on the short side.
1-1 SLU (2nd – 0:38) Keenan Suthers scored on the power play.
2-1 SLU (2nd – 1:34): Suthers added his second goal of the day with a shorthanded goal.
2-2 HC (2nd – 2:03): On the power play, Kevin Darrar moved the puck up the half wall to Johnny Coughlin on the point. The senior defenseman sent a snap shot towards goal where Crinella was ready to grab the rebound and score.
3-2 HC (2nd - 13:48): After an offensive zone faceoff win, Crinella sent a shot wide that wrapped around the boards to Charlie Barrow on the far point. The junior defenseman deked around the St. Lawrence skater and fired in a shot to the back of the net.
3-3 SLU (2nd – 18:20): Cade Gllekel one timed a pass from behind the goal in the low slot.
4-3 SLU (3rd – 2:00): Jake Stevens scored on a rush.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- The shots were even, 26-26.
- The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play and the Saints went 2-6.
- Holy Cross blocked 15 shots.
- Seven Crusaders recorded a point in the game.
- Five Crusader rookies tallied a point.
The Crusaders take on Clarkson at 7:30 p.m. at Cheel Arena on Oct. 20.
