Men's Hockey Splits with Canisius
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated by Canisius, 5-3, on Saturday night.
The Golden Griffins (13-13-2, 13-9-0 AHC) scored the lone first period goal late in the opening frame and added to their lead with another goal in the second period before the Crusaders (12-11-7, 11-7-6 AHC) scored a power play goal. Canisius continued the scoring in the middle period with two more goals to take a 4-1 lead going into the third period.
In the final period, Holy Cross tallied another power play goal early but a five-on-three opportunity for Canisius allowed another goal late in the game. Canisius took the game, 5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1-0 CC (1st, 18:33, EV): A wide shot bounced behind the goal and off the boards to Matt Hoover on the back door, who was able to bang the puck in.
2-0 CC (2nd, 3:51, EV): On the faceoff to the right of Berrafato, Canisius’ Logan Gestro carried the puck from the point to the net and let go a backhand to score.
2-1 HC (2nd, 5:38, PP): Scott Pooley cycled the puck in the far corner to feed Danny Lopez for an opportunity. Lopez’s shot rebounded straight out to Michael Laffin in the slot, who connected on the puck to score.
3-1 CC (2nd, 11:54, EV): As Dylan McLaughlin skated behind the net with the puck, he dropped it back to Matt Long, who quickly shot on the back post for a two goal lead.
4-1 CC (2nd, 19:42, EV): On a rush into the zone, Cameron Heath took an initial shot that Berrafato saved but the rebound was left for Matt Hoover to quickly shoot right under the cross bar.
4-2 HC (3rd, 3:14, PP): In the left side of the offensive zone, Kevin Darrar circled the puck and sent a pass from the top of the circle to Peter Crinella below the goal line. Quickly, Crinella passed across the slot and found Logan Ferguson open for a one-timer.
5-3 CC (3rd, 17:44, PP): Felic Chamberland took a shot from the high slot that rebounded to Grant Meyer on the back door for a five-on-three goal
- Michael Laffin scored his second goal in as many games.
- Logan Ferguson’s power play goal was the Crusaders’ fifth of the weekend.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Canisius outshot Holy Cross, 34-33.
- Paul Berrafato made 29 saves.
- The Crusaders went 2-5 on the power play and 7-8 on the penalty kill.
Holy Cross will play two games at Mercyhurst on Feb. 9 and 10 in Erie, Pa. Both games will be played at 7:05 p.m.
