Five Crusaders Earn All-NEWHA Team Honors

WORCESTER, Mass. – Five members of the Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team received New England Women’s Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) accolades, as announced by the conference Wednesday, Feb. 21. Senior co-captain Kara Violette was named Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-NEWHA First Team. Junior co-captain Tori Messina was named Defensive Player of the Year, and was also named to the All-NEWHA first team. Freshman goalie Julia Pelletier and freshman defenseman Antonia Matzka were named to the All-Rookie team. Senior Kelsey Goostrey was named to the All-Sportswomanship team.

Player of the Year: Kara Violette

Violette is just the second student-athlete in the program’s history to receive a conference Player of the Year award, and she is the first to receive the recognition in back-to-back years. The senior forward led the Crusaders in the regular season with 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists. Her point total and assist total are both career highs.

Violette leads the NEWHA in point scoring, with 1.55 points per game, is second in goal scoring and is tied for third in assists. She is also tied for first in the NEWHA with six power play goals.

She has recorded 130 career points, which ranks third in all-time career points for the program. Her 60 career goals ranks fourth and her 70 career assists ranks third for the all-time career records.

Defender of the Year: Tori Messina

Messina is the first women’s hockey player to receive a Defender of the Year award. The junior has 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists to lead the Crusaders’ defensive core. She was selected for the NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week twice during the 2017-18 season.

Messina is ranked third in the NEWHA in power play points averaging 0.53 per game and tied for first in power play goals with six. She is also ranked third overall in defenseman scoring with 0.95 points per game.

Both Violette and Messina were selected for the All-NEWHA First Team.

All-Rookie Team: Antonia Matzka and Julia Pelletier

Matzka and Pelleier were both named to the All-NEWHA Rookie Team for their play this season.

Matzka has recorded 17 points on four goals and 13 assists. She is ranked fourth in defenseman scoring and is +12 through 26 games played.

Pelletier has played 12 games as a net minder for the Crusaders. She recorded a .928 save percentage and a 1.47 goals against average, which ranks second in the conference for both. She had a career high 49 saves against Harvard on Nov. 17. The freshman has recorded three shutouts this season with two against Saint Anselm.

All-NEWHA Sportswomanship-Team: Kelsey Goostrey

Goostrey was selected for the NEWHA’s All-Sportswomanship team. Goostrey has recorded seven points on five goals and two assists this season.
