Women's Hockey Announces Captains for 2018-19 Season

Holy Cross Athletics   04-24-2018

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women’s ice hockey program has announced its team captains for the 2018-19 season. Rising seniors Tori Messina, Sam Girard and Julie Matthias have been selected to lead the Crusaders starting this fall.

“Tori, Sam and Julie have been major contributors for our program since they arrived at Holy Cross,” said head coach Peter Van Buskirk. “They will provide strong leadership for the team as we enter our first season in Hockey East.”

Messina and Girard served as the captain and assistant captain during the 2017-18 season, respectively. Messina played in 25 games as a part of the defensive core and power play unit. She notched 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists and earned the NEWHA Defensive Player of the Year. Girard played in 25 games as a forward and member of the power play unit recording 18 points on four goals and 14 assists.

"For next season, I am most excited to join Hockey East and all the experiences that are going to come with it,” said Messina. “While it will be quite a challenge for our program, our team is very humbled and excited to have the opportunity to join such a prestigious league and to play against many of the top teams in the country. I am honored to be a captain of this team along with two of my teammates, Sam and Julie, and we are looking forward to leading the team into a new era of HC hockey.”

After training this off-season, Girard says the team is motivated to work hard this summer in preparation for the Hockey East competition.

"Many of us have only dreamed to enter this league, and now it’s our chance to make it real,” said Girard. “I hope to lead the team to the best of my ability. It has been an exciting spring, filled with training in and out of the weight room, and we are all planning on working hard this summer to come out stronger than ever."

Matthias will join Messina and Girard in the leadership core. She played in all 28 games as a member of the first line. Matthias was a key component of the Crusaders’ offense with 26 points on 11 goals and 15 assists. Her 26 point total was a career high.

“I’m looking forward to playing in the one of the best conferences in college hockey,” said Matthias. “As a new captain, I’m hoping to add energy and enthusiasm to a great leadership group and to help lead the team into a successful first season in Hockey East.”
