Peter Pujals To Receive Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior quarterback Peter Pujals has been selected as the recipient of the 72nd annual Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, for outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, sportsmanship and citizenship. Pujals will receive the honor at the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston’s Bob Whelan College Awards Dinner, which will take place on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Burlington Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Mass. Previous Holy Cross players to have won the Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award include Matt Martin (1983), Gordie Lockbaum (1987) and Steve Fox (2003).
Pujals started all 11 games at quarterback for the Crusaders in 2017, connecting on 238 of 430 passes for 2,776 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed the ball 82 times for 151 yards and three scores, while finishing the year with 2,927 yards of total offense. Pujals ranked second in the Patriot League in both passing yards and yards of total offense, while standing third in pass efficiency (119.4 rating).
Over the course of his Holy Cross career, he hit on 1,071 of 1,796 attempts for 11,695 yards and 84 touchdowns, while rushing 511 times for 1,756 yards and 19 scores. Pujals ranks first all-time at Holy Cross in career games played (48), career games started (46) and career pass attempts, while standing second in career passing yards, career completions, career yards of total offense (13,451) and career touchdown passes.
Holy Cross concluded the 2017 season with an overall record of 4-7, and tied for third in the Patriot League with a 3-3 mark in conference games.
