Holy Cross Athletics   09-10-2018

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross freshman wide receiver Spencer Gilliam has been named the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday’s game at Boston College. Gilliam previously earned Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

During the contest against the Eagles, Gilliam accounted for both of the Crusaders’ touchdowns. In the third quarter, he blocked a punt which was returned by freshman defensive back Cristos Argys for Holy Cross’ first points of the day. Later, after junior defensive back Macklin Kortebein blocked a punt, he recovered the ball and carried it into the end zone for the Crusaders’ second touchdown. In addition to his play on the punt block team, Gilliam also returned three kickoffs for 49 yards and made two special teams tackles, one on kickoff coverage and one on punt coverage.

The Crusaders (0-2 overall, 0-1 Patriot League) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they play host to Yale at 1:05 p.m.
