Crusaders Capture First Place At Holy Cross Invitational

The Lead: The Holy Cross women’s track and field team captured first place while hosting the 2017 Holy Cross Invitational at the Hart Track at the Luth Athletic Complex on Saturday.


  • The team of sophomore Isabella DiMare, freshman Allie Smiley, sophomore Sarah Friess and classmate Alexandra Curtin notched a season-best time of 47.30 for a first place finish in the 4x100-meter relay race. Their time met both the ECAC and New England Outdoor Championships’ qualifying standards.
  • In the 400-meter run, juniors Meghan Dietter (second place; 57.76) and Stefanie McArdle (third place; 57.97) both reached New England Championship qualifying standards. Both of their marks serve as career-bests.
  • Junior Claire Turner took second place in the 800-meter run with her season best time of 2:16. Her mark met the New England qualifying standards. Junior Kate Spitler (2:20.10) reached a season-best mark in this event, taking fourth place for Holy Cross.
  • Senior Caroline Carr (17:41.63) and junior Hannah Jeter (17:48.92) took first and second place, respectively in the 5,000 meter run. Both of their times serve as New England qualifiers, while Carr earned a career-best mark with her performance. Junior Elizabeth Lombardo (18:06.15) ran for a career-best time in the 5,000 meter run to claim third place for Holy Cross.
  • DiMare qualified for the New England Outdoor Championship while leading the Crusaders in two separate events. She also picked up two new personal records in the process. First, she ran for second place in the 100-meter hurdles for a time of 14.87. Next, she ran for a time of 1:04.47 in the 400-meter hurdles, taking first place.
  • Junior Tori Zamarra finished third in the 100-meter hurdles for a personal season-best time of 15.13 before hitting another personal season-best time of 1:06.85 in the 400-meter hurdles.
  • Senior co-captain Jennifer Kimball placed first in the javelin with her distance of 36.37 meters. Kimball later placed second in the high jump (1.54 meters).
  • Sophomore Victoria Attaya took fourth place in the discus with a season-best and personal record toss of 36.23 meters. Attaya also reached a personal-best distance of 43.07 meters in the hammer throw.
  • Also in the hammer throw, senior Alliyah Veilleux notched a personal-best distance of 43.50 meters for another Crusader fourth-place finish.
  • Senior co-captain Alexa Eldracher took first place in the triple jump with her distance of 11.26 meters. Freshman Taylor Gensler placed second (11.15 meters), while junior Alanna Hitscherich took third (10.82 meters). Gensler’s distance serves as a personal record.
  • Junior Zoe Matherne placed first in the 1,500 meter run with her time of 4:32.58, while senior co-captain Rachel Sowinski took third place with her time of 4:44.36.
  • Hitscherich finished second place in the long jump with her distance of 5.48 meters, as Curtin finished third (5.42 meters) and Smiley placed fourth (5.25 meters).
  • Freshman Emily Grinnell earned a personal record in the discus throw with her distance of 35.57 meters.


  • Holy Cross returns to action in Easton, Mass. for the Skyhawk Invitational on April 29.
