WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Holy Cross volleyball team lost to American on the road Oct. 28, 3-0. Freshman outside hitter Emmerson Smith led the Crusaders with 10 kills and six digs. Freshman middle hitter Clare Honan notched nine kills (.316 hitting percentage) and freshman outside hitter Katie Kerins had seven kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a kill by freshman setter Rachel Harding, the Crusaders tied the first set 7-7. However, the Eagles went on an 13-2 run to finish out the first set, 25-12.
Holy Cross secured two back-to-back points to lead second set 17-13 and American had to take a timeout. The Eagle came back to tie the set 20-20. The set point went back and forth between the Eagles and the Crusaders and extra points were needed to decided the winner. American took the second set 28-26 in the end.
After a Holy Cross attack error, American gained a 13-8 lead. Kerins notched a kill to make the score 23-17 for the Eagles, but American took the set, 25-18 and the match, 3-0.
The Crusaders will play on the road for the last time this season facing Army and Colgate Nov. 3 and 4, respectively.
