O'Neill Homers Twice In Game Two As Crusaders Split With Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Holy Cross baseball team split a doubleheader with Mercer on Monday, falling 33-6 in game one before earning a 7-3 victory in game two.

GAME ONE

Senior Cam O'Neill helped lead the Crusaders’ offense, batting 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Austin Masel hit 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored for Holy Cross. Sophomore Chris Rinaldi also had a strong outing, hitting 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Mercer was led by Brandon Michie, who batted 4-for-4 with five RBIs and four runs scored. 

Sophomore Zane Hedaya took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in two innings. Chase Burks earned the win for the Bears, allowing four runs on seven hits through five innings pitched.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders got the scoring started in the first inning, as Masel hit an RBI single to bring home sophomore Riley Livingston.
  • Mercer responded in the bottom of the inning, tallying five runs on five hits. The Bears kept the offense going in the second, tallying three runs on three hits.
  • In the third inning, Holy Cross added another run as freshman Peter Dudunakis brought home O’Neill with an RBI double. Rinaldi added another run in the fourth with a solo homer to left center for his first of the season.
  • From the fourth to the sixth inning, the Bears added 13 more runs while adding eight hits.
  • Holy Cross scored two runs on three hits in the seventh, as O’Neill and senior Thomas Russo each notched an RBI.
  • After adding two runs in the seventh inning, Mercer capped off their offensive performance with nine runs off nine hits in the bottom of the eighth inning.

GAME TWO

O’Neill batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored to lead Holy Cross’ offense in game two. Livingston hit 2-for-5 and added three RBIs with a run scored. Rinaldi batted 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Crusaders. Junior Kellen McCormick, freshman Cam Meyer and Masel also crossed the plate in game two. Mercer was led by Truitt, who hit 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Junior Danny Barlok earned his first win of the season, allowing no runs and no hits through 4.1 innings in relief while tossing seven strikeouts. Junior Declan Cronin pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three runs while throwing eight strikeouts. Kevin Coulter took the loss for Mercer after allowing seven runs on eight hits through 4.0 innings after throwing 11 strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • O’Neill notched his second home run of the season with a solo shot to left field in the second inning.
  • Mercer added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to pull ahead 3-1.
  • The Crusaders responded with a strong offensive push in the top of the fourth, as sophomore Jared Enders brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before Livingston and O’Neill combined for two homers to bring in a total of five runs.
  • The Bears threatened to score with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but the Crusaders’ defense earned the final putout on a ground ball to end the inning.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, as the Crusaders head to Georgia Southern to continue their road trip for a single game at 6:00 p.m.
