Brendan King Selected By Chicago Cubs In MLB Draft
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross baseball Class of 2017 graduate Brendan King was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday afternoon. King was picked in the 20th round of the draft, and selected as the 615th overall pick.
King led the Crusaders with 15 starts on the year while posting an ERA of 4.35 in 80.2 innings pitched. He ranked second on the team with 62 strikeouts and held opponents to a collective batting average of .242. King also posted a record of 5-7 while tossing three complete games. In the Patriot League Tournament, King earned two wins while posting a 1.88 ERA in 14.1 innings pitched with 16 strikeouts. He was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. His 15 starts this season tied for second all-time in program history. He also tied for fifth all-time in career strikeouts with 170, and ranks sixth all-time in career innings pitched with 228.2.
Holy Cross went 24-29 on the season, and captured its first-ever Patriot League Championship to secure its first bid to the NCAA Tournament since 1978. The Crusaders also earned their first win in the NCAA Tournament since 1978 with a 7-4 victory over No. 25 Nebraska.
